The new CD from the grandsons, Jr., "One Big Orooni", is a tribute to the magical, zany, scat-singing troubadour Slim Gaillard. Slim was popular in the '40's and '50's in the be-bop jazz scene with his at times ridiculous, but always ridiculously swinging songs that made even the most mundane aspects of everyday life seem exciting, bizarre, and exotic. The band has picked eleven of their favorite Gaillard songs, and has even written one in tribute to the supreme hipster. The kids will hear funny, creative lyrics with lively and swinging jazz licks from Alan MacEwen, Chris Watling, Matt Sedgley, and Moe Nelson--the core members of the grandsons, Jr. Their friends (and Grammy winners) Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer jump in with some vocalizing on a couple tunes, and Tom Mitchell (Dan Hicks, Hula Monsters) adds some tasty guitar licks to the proceedings. Produced and arranged by Chris Watling, the album takes a no-nonsense, live, analog approach that captures the spirit and clarity of the jazz combo sound from the be-bop era. The CD comes with a full-size, 32-page coloring book with illustrations by Matt Brown.
